The Ever Evolving Evelyn

Only 12 weeks on the earth and Evey has developed quite a bag of tricks!

She's been busy strengthening her neck and back muscles and loves to practice sitting up and arching her back during tummy time.  Another favorite is "standing" on her stiffened legs while momma or poppa hold her up. Her hands are always busy, which is nothing new, but now they grasp the pacifier and pull it out of and then push it back into her busy little mouth!  I had to pick her up some new toys so she can practice her gripping and handling skills. They all end up in the mouth, of course, and drooling has reached a whole new level (drool bubbles have become something of an artform at our house).

We're way past cooing now and full into vocalizations which include an odd extended sort of grunting (?!?) that either means she's frustrated or working on something "down below" (we can usually pretty easily guess which one it is...). Her awareness of her surroundings is fully developed now and she loves looking at herself in the mirror, watching basketball on TV, and watching the world go by through the vehicle window.

It takes a bit more to entertain her now and we're having fun introducing her to new objects and people. We took her on her first plane trip this past weekend, up to Michigan to meet Tag's family and Evey had a ball meeting everyone -- it really wore her out and she slept for basically two days after we got home.  She was a perfect angel on the plane and received many compliments on her good behavior from the other passengers.  We are quite the proud parents!

Sleeping Bear's

First of all, I reject the claims of my wife that all Evey and I do is sleep. Heidi simply has a knack of taking pictures with my eyes closed. My eyes are sensitive to flash.

The little sweet pea is really getting a personality of good cheer and love. We're starting to see her reach out for objects and investigate how everything taste. I get such a hoot out of Evey whenever she catches my eyes and sports a huge gummy grin for ol' Dad.

Sharing a Favorite Pastime

I see a trend here, am I right?

Survival of the 2-month visit

Well, it wasn't fun, but we did it.  The first series of vaccinations is now behind us.  One oral vaccine (that was easy -- Evey was obviously intrigued by the fruity flavor -- lots of lip smacking and drooling), one shot in the left leg (took Evey by suprise and she immediately started crying while I let her grip my fingertips in her tightly fisted little hands), and two shots in the right leg (by which time she was simply beyond comforting and cried huge crocodile tears, dissolving her momma into tears as well). Awful awful awful. I held her and rocked her in my arms, softly shooshing her crying away, and she calmed down with hiccuping breaths.  The nurse had allowed me time to nurse her prior to the assault of shots, and I was able to calm her down enough to nurse her afterward.  That seemed to help tremendously, and she gladly succumbed to sleep, not waking even when I tucked her into the car seat.  Poor baby girl.

At least the first part of the visit was fun for her -- she loves Dr. Ziebarth and the friendly nurses.  Right smack dab in the middle of the growth curve, at 9 weeks she measures 11 lbs 4 oz, is 23 inches long, and has a "normal" size melon.  Scored high marks yet again -- good head control and neck strength, and wonderful interactiveness (she's a charmer).

We're home now, and she seems to have fully recovered.  Even smiling and laughing at me -- all is forgiven. It will be a quiet, restful day.  Need to dose her with Tylenol every 4 hours and monitor her temperature to be sure she isn't reacting badly to any of the (6!!) vaccines.  It's a cold, rainy day anyhow, so it's nice to hole up and just have a cozy afternoon at home.
